The lovely Geneviève Arends assisting on the beach of Zandvoort, Netherlands, during a photoshoot on a very windy day, before being photographed herself. Normally I use lightshapers like softboxes, striplights or spots (hardly ever umbrellas) but when it's blowing a hooligan like it did this day I go with an ordinary reflector. Luckily I had to photograph two people and they took turns assisting. Coulda used a lightstand but shooting this way allows you to move with your subject which loosens up the session.

A new magazine has been launched in Holland, called GYM. Sho 'nuff, it's all about fitness, food and health. An article on triathlon had to be included, obviously :-) and I was very pleased to take the photos illustrating the interviews. One of the interviewees, Rob Barel, a strong and fit 59-year old triathlete, former world champion Ironman, is training for his next Ironman. Once more confirming my strong belief that ageing does not necessarily equate degradation. Stories about people like Rob Barel inform and inspire my own training.

Workprints of black and white 6 x 7 negatives, shot this winter, all within a few miles from where I live. That’s frost on the trees.

The trails you see in some of these shots are where I run in winter, very still, very beautiful.

Writer and journalist Thijs Zonneveld for Losse Veter. Thijs is a former professional cyclist who now writes about the sport. He doesn't pull punches and recently released a book on the life of Thomas Dekker, a phenomenally talented cyclist who flew too close to the sun, ultimately sabotaged his own career and nearly cost him his life. Zonneveld is one of the few to openly talk about what goes on in the peloton, read: doping, much to the chagrin of many riders and managers.

Richard Douma, one of Holland's best 1500m runners. I'm convinced an athlete's character ultimately decides which distance they choose as runners. Richard being no exception, his bodyshape perfectly suited for this murderous discipline. He's all energy, up for anything, very easy to photograph.

These portraits of ultrarunners were taken right before -and directly after- a 125 km footrace in Holland along nothing but sandy beach, starting at midnight. My idea was to try and capture the effort expended by these athletes who battle cold, lack of sleep and tough terrain. 125 k's is not exceptional, several of these runners have run races twice this distance! Some showed no signs of exhaustion, others had to dig deep to cover the distance. But what they all possess in plenitude is mental toughness. Of the top seven, four were women, proving once again that as distance increases, the difference between men and women seems to evaporate.

This photo shows Rut Zoutman, 57-years old and veteran of all editions of this gruelling race, including the ones when the distance still measured 160 kms, or 100 miles. Rut's strength and mental toughness is the stuff of legends although straight after finishing this year's edition -also the last- he exclaimed "you'll never see me here again, I'm done with this." Naturally, a week later he was musing  on once more taking to the beach on his own, gliding northbound, not bound by any race rules or media attention.

The boys are growing fast. Boet is turning seven soon, and Tije will be nine in November. Here I caught them near the lighthouse on the pier in IJmuiden. They're always active, moving. Shooting this day solely with a 50mm lens made it harder to catch them at the right moment but here it is, to me anyway.

I'm re-learning to swim and to swim with these guys is really good coz they're kind enough to teach me how to do it right. A thinking man's sport, swimming is. It's all technique, form and suppleness. Slowly working my way to my first half-triathlon. Still a long ways off but, one day..

Egmond Pier Egmond is a bikerace in the Netherlands along a 36 km stretch of beach. It's brutal as the conditions are usually atrocious with strong winds, rain and/or sleet. It's a two-way course, and usually the riders have a tailwind on the way back. When the sand is hard they reach speeds up to 60 km/hour, a sight to behold. More pictures in my portfolio, see the sports section.

A few outtakes from the shoot with the departing Greenpeace International Executive director Kumi Naidoo, to illustrate his farewell interview. Pictures were taken at the Amsterdamse Bos. The morning was very still, foggy and somewhat mystical but the sun burned it all off just before we got started, darn it! To overpower the harsh sunlight I ended up using three flashes and was very ably assisted by Gerda Horneman, long time chief photos at GP Netherlands.

A tall order to replace Kumi. He has those qualities I've seen in many great GP 'veterans'. Drive, charisma, being present in the moment and, inclusiveness. And with that I mean being open to new ideas and welcoming to new people. Anything to further the cause. All the best in your homeland, Kumi Naidoo, hope we meet again some day!

Talk about perseverance...I pass this gritty, lone tree on most of my runs thru our dunes. It's bend right over from taking severe beatings from countless westerlies, its trunk all sheared and busted but still it bears fruit and just doesn't give up! I usually pass it near the end of a long run and it always puts my fatigue into perspective. I've been wanting to photograph it for a long time, this is a first attempt. Camera on tripod for 10 minutes, the tree lit rather sloppily with the light from my phone. I have to do it again with flashes one day soon to do it proper justice.

Greenpeace drew attention to the upcoming COP 21, the Paris Climate Conference, yesterday during the second stage of the Tour de France. The wide shot I took with a second camera on a tripod, triggered by the camera I took the vertical shot with. The clouds burst open at the exact moment the riders screamed past. Our day started at eight o'clock and finished some twelve hours later but I only photographed for about 15 seconds. Speedy delivery of the images was essential and some ten minutes later the pictures were at the GP International picturedesk. Great team effort!
